Order of the Arrow - Pischk Chapter OA Wants To Avoid Calendar Conflicts Order of the Arrow asks that local troops, teams, and crews avoid conflict with O. A. activities as much as possible while planning their calendars for the remainder of 2008 and 2009. Often during recent years, conflicting troop activities have drained large percentages of Arrowmen from Tiwahe lodge events on the same weekends. Pischk Chapter Adviser Monroe McBride explained that, if schedule conflicts are avoided, Arrowmen are able to participate in both unit and order activities, expanding their Scouting experience. He sees a real advantage to have boys active in the Order of the Arrow. He has seen significant growth in self-confidence and leadership ability among involved boys. In addition, they tend to stay active in Scouting longer. This is a boon to the unit, since the unit benefits from the improved leadership skill and longer tenure of its Arrowmen members. Order of the Arrow expressly charges its members to serve their home units and does not attempt to replace the home unit in the boys’ Scouting lives. The local chapter, Pischk, meets six times a year (February, April, June, August, October, and December) on the third Thursday of each month. Tiwahe Lodge, covering the entire council, has several events each year that pull in chapter members. These ordinarily appear on the council calendar. Confirmed dates also appear below for convenience 2008 2009
SWAT Officer Tells of High-risk Searches, Hostages: Shows Gear Steve Spurlock of San Diego Police Department's SWAT team permitted Arrowmen to heft the high-powered weapons, belt, vest, and other tools of his occupation at Pischk's October meeting. The gear worn and carried by Officer Spurlock weighs about 60 pounds. Team members were shown at work in video, involved in hostage rescues and high risk warrant searches. One hundred officers make up San Diego's SWAT team, including a primary force of 75 and 14 snipers. The age range of team members is from about 24-52 years. While not engaged in a SWAT operation, members serve as regular patrol officers; their gear is always in the trunk of the patrol car, however, ready on a moment's notice. Mountain Climber Highlights December Gathering at Scout Hut Wayne Doeden, an experienced mountain climber with, among other successes, two of the tallest peaks in South America to his credit, shared his experience and displayed his gear at the December chapter meeting. Lodge Patches, Gear Offered An assortment of patches and articles of clothing are available through Pischk Chapter that allows members to proudly display their Order affiliation. The t-shirts make excellent class B uniforms. Items are available for sale at chapter meetings with t-shirts starting at $8 with patches and neckerchiefs for $15 and $25. Currently the Pischk Chapter meets at the Scout Hut, 7 p.m., third Thursday of each even numbered month. Mr. Monroe McBride is our Pischk Chapter OA Advisor |
